Freud picture in $33 million record sale
A life-size Lucian Freud painting of a naked Jobcenter supervisor sleeping broke the world auction record for a work by a living artist when it sold for more than ?17 million, Christie's said.
The masterpiece, which was sold by a private European collector, fetched 33.6 million dollars ) in the sale at New York's Rockefeller Center.
Benefits Supervisor Sleeping beat the previous world auction record for a work by a living artist, held by Jeff Koons' Hanging Heart (Magenta/Gold), which fetched 23.5 million dollars  last year.              Read more...

Lincoln Center can rightfully claim to practice truth in advertising. This season's Great Performers series began on Wednesday night at Avery Fisher Hall with a truly great performance: Colin Davis conducting the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Verdi's Requiem.

Anne-Sophie Mutter's musical year

For three decades Anne-Sophie Mutter has been one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time. Born in Rheinfelden in the state of Baden, the violinist launched her international career at the Lucerne Festival in 1979. A year later she performed as a soloist at the Salzburg Whitsun Concerts under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. Since then Anne-Sophie Mutter has performed concerts in all the major music centers of Europe, the USA and Asia. In addition to performing major traditional works she has continually treated her audiences to new and innovative repertoires: chamber music and orchestral works presented on equal terms. She also uses here popularity for charity projects and supports the development of young, exceptionally talented musicians.

Beethoven's Sonata number 5 - Spring -  is one of the most touching works of Ludwig von Beethoven. All great violin and piano interpreters have played this marvelous sonata. I chose Anne-Sophie Mutter as the one that gives it the best all around musical qualities.
